It all started with a phone call.

Having seen the project at Great Scotland Yard, the client’s design team approached us to design the overcladding of the original grade 1 listed Victorian Atrium and then carry the same design onto the new build, a four-storey roof extension.

The brief was relatively simple.

It needed to be lightweight, it needed to be quick to install to minimise disruption to the hotel guests and with it being Claridges, it needed the “WOW” factor.

Working closely with Arups and Blair Associates, we sourced a pearlescent tile manufactured by Senio in Italy and worked in partnership with the Fabspeed Group who manufactured the Proclad system, thus allowing the design to incorporate hidden movement joints, giving the eight-storey building a feel of one mass of material without any breaks. A shallow pool was installed on the top of the Atrium for the Penthouse Suite and the daylight reflects through the water onto the tiles to give a truly stunning effect.

After 5 years of involvement, the scheme was greeted by all parties as one of the most exceptional schemes we had all worked on and indeed it had the “WOW” factor.
